Lob Lob - Lobster Art Creation Process

  • Jun 25

A blue lobster is wrapping seaweed prawn rolls with his big claws. He’s a prawn lover, and as a food booth owner in the Night Market Under The Sea, he just has to share his favorite dish with the rest of the ocean dwellers!

This lobster artwork features another character from the Night Market Under The Sea collection, Lob Lob.

Inspiration

As a mid-level creature in the ocean food chain, lobsters aren’t on the menu at the Night Market Under The Sea. Lob Lob runs his own food booth (well, I just felt that some crustaceans had to be booth owners!).

While searching for lobster references, I came across some photos of blue lobsters. I was attracted by the beautiful and unique blue color. Later I learned it's caused by a genetic mutation. Either way, having a blue lobster as a booth owner just looks incredibly pleasing to the eye.

Why does he use prawns for his dishes? Lobsters sit somewhere in the middle of the ocean food chain. In the wild, they naturally prey on prawns. So I made Lob Lob a prawn lover. But just cooking prawns alone didn’t feel unique enough, so I thought of something like a dim sum, shrimp rice rolls.

Since rice batter wouldn’t work underwater, I swapped it out for seaweed as the wrapper instead. And because sea creatures don't need to peel the prawns, whole fresh prawns, heads and shells included, are wrapped right in. It’s actually more in line with their taste!

Cooking Tips

Anyone who's cooked prawns and shrimps before knows that once they are cooked, they naturally curl up. With the way Lob Lob wraps his seaweed prawn rolls, it’d be impossible to keep the prawns straight unless they’re prepped in advance.

To keep prawns or shrimps straight while cooking, either thread them onto skewers or make shallow cuts along their backs. With those massive claws of Lob Lob, it’s no surprise Lob Lob opts for the cutting method.

Challenges

While painting, I realized that the blue lobster’s shell isn’t just one solid shade of blue. Probably due to its genetic mutation, the shell actually contains hints of light blue and purplish tones, with yellowish-brown edges. So while the shape of the lobster wasn’t too difficult to draw, most of my time went into handling the color gradients.

Also… I only noticed after finishing the piece that I had drawn the claws the wrong way around. A few days later, I went back and fixed them 😅.
