Graceful, ancient, and endlessly fascinating, sea turtles are among the most iconic creatures in our oceans. These gentle reptiles have glided through the seas for over 100 million years. They’ve got some seriously cool tricks up their flippers.

Whether you’re a turtle fan or just love ocean trivia, here are 10 incredible sea turtle facts that will make you appreciate these marine marvels even more.

Sea Turtles Love Jellyfish Snacks

One of the sea turtle’s favorite foods? Jellyfish! Leatherback sea turtles, the largest of all sea turtles, feed almost exclusively on these gelatinous creatures. Their mouths and throats are lined with spiny papillae that help them grip the slippery prey.

They’re Older Than Dinosaurs

Sea turtles have been swimming in our oceans for more than 120 million years, long before humans and even before T. rex walked the Earth. Their survival through multiple mass extinctions makes them one of the most resilient species on the planet.

Leatherbacks Are the Heavyweight Champions

The leatherback sea turtle can weigh up to 2,000 pounds (900 kg) and grow over 7 feet long. Despite their size, they’re incredibly agile in water and are capable of diving to depths of over 4,000 feet.

They Navigate With Earth’s Magnetic Field

Sea turtles are nature’s navigators. They can detect the Earth’s magnetic field and use it like a GPS to travel thousands of miles across oceans. Then return to the exact beach where they were born.

They Always Come Home to Nest

Female sea turtles are known for their nesting loyalty. They return to the same beach where they hatched (sometimes decades later) to lay their eggs. It’s a heartwarming display of instinct and memory.

Sand Temperature Determines Gender

In sea turtles, the temperature of the nest determines the sex of the hatchlings. Warmer sand produces more females, while cooler sand results in more males. Rising global temperatures are affecting this natural balance.

They Disappear Into the “Lost Years”

After hatching, baby turtles head out to sea and vanish into ocean currents for several years. This mysterious phase is known as the "lost years" because we know very little about where they go or what they do during this time.

Some Can Glow Underwater

In 2015, scientists discovered a hawksbill sea turtle that glowed in the dark! This is called biofluorescence, absorbing light and re-emitting it in a different color. It was the first time this trait had ever been seen in a reptile.

They Can’t Tuck In Like Land Turtles

Unlike their land-dwelling cousins, sea turtles can’t retract their heads or limbs into their shells. Their flippers and streamlined shape are perfect for swimming, but not for defense.

They “Cry” Salt

Ever seen a sea turtle that looks like it’s crying? They’re not sad. They’re staying salty. Special glands near their eyes remove excess salt from their bodies after they drink seawater, giving the appearance of tears.

Final Splash

Sea turtles are more than just adorable faces on beach conservation posters They’re oceanic legends with superpowers we’re still discovering. As climate change and human threats endanger their future, learning about them is the first step in helping protect them.
